Dear All,

2017 was a strange year, opening on the aftermath of Brexit and Trump election.

For us, 2017 was a year of changes, with a mixture of sadness and happiness. Jean-Pierre, Laurent’s dad, passed away in May after a long illness. He leaves us with wonderful memories, and beautiful paintings.

Thomas did well at his IB diploma and is now studying Anthropologie at the University of Kent and enjoying his new student life….Katia, Laurent’s sister, completed her PHD in Cinema with Honours and we are excited to call her Doctor Katharina Bellan.

Alice is finishing High School, and is studying really hard to fulfil her dream: becoming a doctor. She has started volunteering at the Royal Free Hospital and is awaiting the results of her applications to Medical Schools.

Laurent is still happy at Eurostar, getting ready to launch a new London-Amsterdam route and leading exciting digitalisation and big data initiatives. After two and a half years at Tes, and launching two new digital ventures, I am exploring my next adventure and working on my ellpha project with a friend. Our goal is to accelerate gender equality using technology. I was lucky to attend Ted Women in New Orleans last November which was a once in a lifetime experience.

In 2017, our family has explored the world, visited Thailand and Cambodia, hiked under the rain in the Highlands and in the Dolomites, cycled in Copenhagen, visited Porto and the Duro valley, Lac Guarda, as well as Moscow and some parts of Russia whilst refreshing our Russian literature memories.

With Alice, we spent a few magical days at the Avignon Theatre Festival in July, watching a Japanese Antigone under the stars and many great plays; with Laurent and friends, we attended many wonderful plays and shows in London. Alice and I also launched a modest writing site, littlewords.live.

And of course, we continue to love exploring new ideas, the world and technology. We have avidly been testing voice technology this year, comparing both Alexa and Google Home, and equipped our parents with voice activation which they love.

We are ending 2017 in Grenoble, with my family and under the snow.

2017 a été une année étrange pour le monde, assombrie par le Brexit et de l'élection de Trump.

Chez les Bellans de Londres, 2017 a été une année de changements avec son lot de tristesses et de joies. Jean-Pierre, le papa de Laurent s'est éteint le 24 Mai après une longue maladie. Monika, Katia, Laurent, et tous les petits enfants, famille et amis ont partagés souvenirs et moments passés avec Jean-Pierre, d'Alger à Malaucène. Tristement, Alain, le grand frère de Jean-Pierre nous a également quitté, au lendemain de Noel.

2017 a aussi marqué le succès de Thomas a l'IB (International Baccalauréat) et son entrée à l'université de Kent pour étudier l'Anthropologie. Katia, la sœur de Laurent a brillamment soutenue son PHD en cinéma le 24 Novembre... et nous sommes tous fiers de l'appeler Docteur Katharina Bellan.

Alice est en terminale, et travaille dur pour réaliser son rêve : devenir médecin. Elle a commencé à faire du volontariat à l’hôpital Royal Free. Laurent est toujours chez Eurostar, et continue ses projets de digitalisation et de big data. Quant à moi, après 2 ans et demi chez Tes occupés à lancer deux nouveaux businesses digitaux, je prépare ma prochaine aventure, tout en continuant à travailler sur le project ellpha qui vise à accélérer la parité homme femme en utilisant la technologie et l’Intelligence Artificielle. Dans ce cadre, j’ai eu la chance de participer à TED Women à la Nouvelle Orléans avec une amie qui travaille avec moi sur ellpha.

En 2017, nous avons exploré monde, et avons arpenté les Highlands sous la pluie, Copenhague à vélo, visité Porto et la Vallée de la Douro, le Lac de Gardes, les Dolomites, Moscou et un petit coin de Russie.

Alice et moi avons passé quelques jours magiques au Festival de Théâtre d'Avignon, et, avec Laurent et des amis, nous avons vu de merveilleuses pièces de théâtre à Londres...ainsi que quelques expositions fantastiques. Alice et moi avons aussi lancé un modeste site avec nos « petits écrits », littlewords.live.

Et bien-sûr nous continuons à nous passionner pour les idées, le monde et la technologie, à tester Alexa et Google Home (maintenant installés chez nos parents), à lire, apprendre et découvrir…

Nous terminons l’année en famille à Grenoble, ou la neige est au rendez-vous. Nous vous souhaitons une merveilleuse année 2018, pleine de projets, de rencontres, de découvertes et de grandes et petites joies.
